How to use the Trezor Keep Metal

Keeping your wallet backup (formerly recovery seed) safe is a vital aspect of managing your bitcoin and crypto assets responsibly. The Trezor Keep Metal is here to make this process as simple and secure as possible.

Trezor Keep Metal is compatible with both Single-share and Multi-share backup schemes.

In this guide, we walk you through each step to help you set up your Trezor Keep Metal correctly, ensuring peace of mind in self-custody.

Important: Before you start, note that Trezor Keep Metal holds only the first 4 letters of each word. These 4 letters are unique to each word, so there's no need to worry about potential confusion or security issues.

What do you need?

  • Trezor Keep Metal
  • Capsule chamber
  • Punching tool
  • Pre-marking pen
  • Tamper-evident stickers
  • You'll also need your completed backup card from your hardware wallet (not included)

Video walkthrough

Step 1: Prepare the Capsule

  • Remove the punching tool and set it aside for now.
  • Unscrew and remove the capsule chamber.

  • Place the capsule chamber back in the tray box where the punching tool was initially located, ensuring it fits securely to prevent any damage during the punching process.

Step 2: Understand the layout

  • Familiarize yourself with the layout where each A-Z row corresponds to one letter of your wallet backup word. Follow this pattern:
    • First letter on the first row
    • Second letter on the second row
    • Repeat for the third and fourth letters

Note that you'll be working with the first four letters of each wallet backup word.

Step 3: Marking and punching

1. Pre-marking
  • Use the pre-marking pen to mark the first four letters of each wallet backup word.
2. Punching
  • Position the punching tool on the pre-marked letters.
  • Press down with sufficient force until you hear a click, indicating the surface has been punched through.

Step 4: Storing your wallet backup card (Optional)

  • Roll and place the card in the capsule chamber for quick and easy wallet recovery in the future.
  • Seal the wallet backup card using the provided T-shaped sticker, allowing it to overhang the edge of the rolled card.

Step 5: Sealing the capsule

  • Close the capsule.

  • Secure it using the short horizontal tamper-evident sticker, placing it vertically over the capsule seal.
  • Note that each sticker has a unique ID and is for one-time use, helping you to confirm that your Trezor Keep Metal remains uncompromised.

Congratulations that’s it! You have now secured your wallet backup using Trezor Keep Metal. Remember, taking the time to safely store your wallet backup is a proactive step in ensuring the security of your crypto assets.
