Move crypto to a wallet with a new wallet backup

If your wallet backup has been lost, or if you think that your wallet backup might have been compromised, we recommend sending your funds to your other Trezor device as soon as possible.

See our guide on sending crypto in Trezor Suite.

If you own only one Trezor device, you can move your funds to a new wallet with a new wallet backup, but doing so safely is a relatively complicated process.

Lost your wallet backup

If you lost your wallet backup but still have access to your wallet, move your funds elsewhere immediately. Then, wipe the Trezor device and create a new wallet with a new wallet backup.

It is recommended to have a spare Trezor device for situations like these. If you have time, order a second Trezor device from the Trezor shop.

If you already have a spare Trezor, or once your new Trezor arrives, please proceed with the steps described in the You have multiple Trezor devices available section.

Follow the instructions below carefully and always be sure to write down your wallet backup securely.

Items you will need:

By sending your cryptocurrencies to a third-party wallet, you are exposing your coins to a potentially dangerous environment.

This should only be done in emergency situations.

If you are under time pressure, follow these steps:

  1. Send your cryptocurrencies to a third-party compatible wallet.

  2. Set up your Trezor with a new wallet backup and carefully write it down:

  3. Get the receiving address for your newly generated wallet:

    • Go to the Accounts page and select or add an account for the cryptocurrency you will be transferring.
    • Click on the Receive tab in the selected account.
    • Click "Show full address" and copy the receiving address of your new Trezor account. (See Receiving payments).
  4. Transfer the cryptocurrencies from the third-party wallet to your newly backed-up Trezor wallet.

Your wallet backup has been compromised

Items you will need:

  1. Ensure you have your original wallet backup available. Before starting, check that the wallet backup is valid by performing a check wallet backup process:

  4. Get the receiving address for your newly generated wallet (follow the same steps as outlined earlier).

  5. Transfer your funds to the new wallet.

  6. Verify the new wallet backup by performing a check wallet backup process again.

  7. Wipe the device. Consider your old wallet backup compromised – do not use it again.

  8. Recover your Trezor using the new wallet backup.

  9. Your funds should appear as a pending incoming transaction.

Skip the first step below if you wish to use an already initialized Trezor (with existing and backed-up accounts).

  1. Initialize your second device and create a new wallet backup:

  2. Verify the new wallet backup by performing a check wallet backup process.

  3. Generate the necessary receiving addresses and copy them.

  4. Transfer your cryptocurrencies from the compromised wallet to the second device.

  5. Wipe the original device or repurpose it:

    • Follow the respective wiping guide.
