Move crypto to a wallet with a new wallet backup

If your wallet backup has been lost, or if you think that your wallet backup might have been compromised, we recommend sending your funds to another Trezor device or a third party wallet app as soon as possible.

See our guide on sending crypto in Trezor Suite.

If you own only one Trezor device, you can also move your funds to a new wallet with a new wallet backup, but doing so safely is a relatively complicated process.

Your wallet backup has been compromised

If you suspect your backup has been compromised, you should assume that is the case and move your funds elsewhere immediately. Doing the steps promptly and sequentially minimizes the window during which stolen funds could be drained.

Lost your wallet backup

If you lost your wallet backup but still have access to your wallet, move your funds elsewhere immediately by following the steps to move crypto using a third-party (hot) wallet or move crypto with multiple Trezor devices available. Then, wipe the Trezor device and create a new wallet with a new wallet backup.

It is recommended to have a spare Trezor device for situations like these. If you have time, order a second Trezor device from the Trezor shop.

If you already have a spare Trezor, or once your new Trezor arrives, please proceed with the steps described in the You have multiple Trezor devices available section.

By sending your cryptocurrencies to a third-party wallet, you are exposing your coins to a potentially dangerous environment.

This should only be done in emergency situations.

Strategies to move your crypto

Follow the instructions below carefully and always be sure to write down your wallet backup securely.

    • Click on the Receive tab in the selected account.
    • Click "Show full address" and copy the receiving address of each cryptocurrency’s new Trezor account. (See Receiving payments). You will need them in a later step.

    • Ensure you have moved all funds to your new Trezor.
    • The old wallet backup can now be destroyed, or defaced, so you do not use it.
    • When destroying a backup, confirm it is the one you do not intend to use, and not your new backup.
