Fix passphrase wallet problems in Trezor Suite

Most passphrase problems come down to the same thing: the passphrase you entered is not the one you entered before, or it's the right passphrase on top of the wrong wallet backup. Any passphrase combines with a wallet backup to open a different passphrase wallet. The same passphrase on a different backup opens a different wallet too.

For what a passphrase is, see What is a passphrase?

To turn the feature on and open a wallet, see Using a passphrase wallet in Trezor Suite.

Trezor Suite shows Passphrase is incorrect when signing or verifying

Trezor Suite never stores your passphrase. When you sign a transaction or verify a receive address, it asks you to enter the passphrase again so your Trezor can authorize the action.

Trezor Safe 7 passphrase confirmation dialog with options to enter the passphrase in the app or on the device.

If it does not match, Trezor Suite tells you: Transaction signing error: Passphrase is incorrect, or Address verification error: Passphrase is incorrect.

Error banner stating address verification failed because the passphrase is incorrect.

Close the message and select the action again. Re-enter the passphrase from your written copy, one character at a time. See Find the typo in your passphrase.

Your passphrase wallet is empty

Trezor Suite reports a wallet as empty when it finds no balance and no transaction history on your enabled networks. Two things cause that.

Passphrase does not match.

Usually a capital letter, a space, or a typo. Select Try again and re-enter it from your written copy, one character at a time. See Find the typo in your passphrase.

Network not enabled.

The passphrase is right, but Trezor Suite has nothing to look at. Select + Add next to Ready on on the empty wallet screen, or go to Settings → Networks, then check again.

Passphrase wallet reported as empty, with options to add a network, open it anyway, or try again

Selecting Yes, open is safe. You get an empty wallet because that passphrase has no funds. The wallet holding your funds is untouched, and you can still reach it by entering the correct passphrase. If the passphrase was right and the network was the problem, go to Settings → Networks and enable it, then check the wallet again.

Find the typo in your passphrase

Every string of characters opens some wallet, so Trezor Suite cannot tell you which character is wrong. Work through the variations yourself.

  • Check the capital letters. Passphrases are case-sensitive.
  • Check for spaces at the start, in the middle, and at the end. A space counts as a character.
  • Select the eye icon in the input field to see what you have typed before you confirm it.
  • Check your keyboard layout if you type on a computer. Character maps differ between devices.
  • Check the length. Trezor Suite accepts the standard ASCII set, up to 50 characters. See Allowed characters.

A single character changes the wallet. Correct Horse Battery opens one wallet. correct Horse Battery opens a different one, and so does CorrectHorseBattery.

Trezor Suite shows Passphrase mismatch

Trezor Suite asks you to type the passphrase twice, and the second entry did not match the first. No wallet has opened yet. Re-enter the passphrase from your written copy.

On desktop: select Start over and enter the passphrase again from the beginning.

On mobile: select Try Again to enter it again, or Cancel to leave the flow.

You cannot find the passphrase option

Passphrase wallets are turned off in your device settings. Turn on Use Passphrase wallets, then open the passphrase wallet from the wallet switcher. See Open a passphrase wallet.

You forgot your passphrase

There is no recovery. A passphrase is not stored on your Trezor or in Trezor Suite, so nobody can look it up or reset it, including Trezor Support.

Work through the variations you can think of: different capital letters, with and without spaces, different punctuation, common typos. Write down each one you try, so you do not repeat attempts or lose track. If you wrote part of it down, start there. See Find the typo in your passphrase.

Your Standard wallet and any other passphrase wallets are unaffected. You reach your Standard wallet from the wallet switcher without entering anything.

You want to change or remove your passphrase

You cannot change a passphrase or take it off a wallet. Move the funds instead.

  1. Open the wallet you want to move the funds to, your Standard wallet or a different passphrase wallet, and copy a receive address from it.
  2. Open the wallet holding the funds.
  3. Send to that address as you would to any other wallet. See Send crypto in Trezor Suite.

This is an on-chain transaction, so you pay the network fee. The old passphrase wallet stays reachable with the same passphrase.

Your addresses are different from what you expected

The same wallet backup and the same passphrase produce the same wallet in any compatible app. Different addresses mean one of the two inputs differs, or the app is looking at a different account type.

  • Check which wallet is open in Trezor Suite. The Standard wallet and a passphrase wallet have separate addresses.
  • Check the passphrase, one character at a time.
  • Check the account type if you are comparing against another app. Legacy, SegWit, and Taproot accounts each have their own addresses within the same wallet.
