Back in 2011, long before “crypto Twitter”, NFTs, or VC-backed chains existed, users of the BitcoinTalk forum came up with a new currency - not to launch a network, but to make fun of btc.... and so: The first memecoin/memecurrency was born.
On May 23, 2011, a Something Awful poster cracked, “Has anyone called them buttcoins yet?”. It was sophomoric and perfect. Within weeks the gag metastasized into Buttcoin.org, a parody blog that described a “peer to peer butt” economy while cataloging mining fiascos, exchange blowups, and MLM-adjacent “innovations”.
