Resumen

Trezor Academy was founded to support grassroots Bitcoin education in communities where traditional financial systems often fail to reach the unbanked. Since launching in 2023, the initiative has expanded across dozens of countries through local educators, community partnerships, and in-person programs.

As Trezor Academy enters a new chapter, with a redesigned website, new donation options, and a documentary highlighting circular Bitcoin economies across Africa, you can see firsthand how Bitcoin education is creating opportunities, empowering businesses, and helping communities build a stronger financial future.

What if Bitcoin's greatest impact isn't happening on Wall Street?

While headlines focus on ETFs, regulation, and price action, Bitcoin is quietly changing lives elsewhere…

In parts of Africa, Bitcoin isn't a speculative asset. It's a practical tool for saving, transacting, and participating in the global economy when traditional financial systems fall short.

As Trezor Academy Lead, Josef Tětek explains:

“The reality? In many parts of Africa, fiat money doesn’t work. As a store of value or as a medium of exchange, the infrastructure and credibility simply aren’t there. Cross-border payments are often impossible… unless you use Bitcoin. This is where the real Bitcoin revolution is happening. Bitcoin’s future may well be decided in the Global South, as it offers a strong alternative to fiat money’s most pressing issues and is permissionless, unlike any other potential solution. Bitcoin thrives in hostile financial environments, which then drives adoption and innovation.”

That’s why Trezor Academy was created…

What is Trezor Academy?

Founded in 2023, Trezor Academy is our non-profit initiative dedicated to bringing Bitcoin education across Africa and beyond through free, in-person learning and community-led programs.

“I knew we had to support bottom-up, community-led education. At Trezor Academy, I work with local leaders who are trusted in their communities and can teach Bitcoin in the proper cultural context. You can’t just fly in as an outsider and preach. Local adoption needs local voices.” - Josef Tětek

A new chapter for Trezor Academy

To better understand the impact of these initiatives, our team traveled across South Africa in February 2026 to visit several Bitcoin circular economies and meet the people building them.

They visited:

This is part of our renewed effort to expand the Academy, with a redesigned website and a new way to support grassroots Bitcoin education.

Meet the educators, students, and communities helping Bitcoin take root across Africa

We recorded our recent road trip as a short documentary. Along the way, we met educators, businesses, and students using Bitcoin to solve real-world challenges in their communities:

Help support local Bitcoin education

Trezor Academy donations are now available at the Trezor.io checkout and directly through the Trezor Academy site.

Every contribution helps fund local educators, educational resources, community events, and Bitcoin learning programs in regions where access to financial education can have a lasting impact.

Bitcoin education grows through local educators and initiatives like these…

Here are two impactful stories from a student and educator:

Linda, TA Educator (Kenya)

“With the Academy’s support, I’ve grown Bitcoin education around my university, secured backing from credible Bitcoin companies like Blink, seeded Bitcoin Clubs across Kenyan universities, and begun onboarding women to both accept Bitcoin and manage their businesses with more confidence and stability.”

Dahl, student (Burundi)

“After completing the three courses, I began my career in the Bitcoin ecosystem. I am currently a contributor to the Plan B Network, where I translate educational content into Kirundi. In addition, I have created a small local journal through which I share the latest Bitcoin news.”

And one story that sticks with Josef:

"George from Tofo BTC, the first merchant in Mozambique accepting Bitcoin, has been making the 8-hour bus journey from Tofo to Maputo to attend our inaugural Trezor Academy sessions. We invited him to share his real-world experience accepting Bitcoin at his clothing shop in Tofo Beach Market using Blink and Bitrefill, as well as self-custody with Blue Wallet and Misty Breez. After each session, he heads straight back home (an 8-hour journey) to keep his business running. It's epic. This is just one of many stories from the Trezor Academy community.”

Learn more about the challenges facing these communities and why Bitcoin is becoming a tool for freedom:

Bitcoin adoption isn't only measured by price charts, institutions, or headlines. It's reflected in educators teaching their communities, business owners accepting BTC, and students building new opportunities for themselves and others.

As Trezor Academy enters this new chapter, we're excited to continue supporting the people helping Bitcoin take root where it can make the greatest difference.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the Academy so far and to those who choose to support its mission in the future. We’re still early.
